The good thing about smaller towns is Friday Night High School Football. Every Friday night during football season you will always see lights on as you roll into town with this past Friday night two of the three local high schools having their last game before the playoffs (unless they didn’t make it marking this their last game of the season). I ended up covering Tracy High School who is currently playing at West High while they have their field worked on. They faced Bear Creek High School from Stockton, CA to what ended up being a one sided game.

Since I am no longer a staff photographer for any organization I mostly freelance on the weekends, Friday – Sunday, while working a 9-5. However, since all the work is towards the city and I moved out in the valley, I have a long commute to and from work, roughly 55 miles. Some may think its nuts and some times I do think im nuts for making that trek that far but im used to it. When I drove as a news photographer I used to put around 100-200 miles on my car every day. Granted driving when I drove usually meant no traffic and I was getting paid for it. It was Friday so I took out the beast! I drove my car to and from work and since this was a busy week, I had to go in early and leave late from my 9-5…but the game started at 7. I ended up finishing everything at about 5:30pm at work and headed out at around 5:45 making it just in time for the game. The bad part of coming “on time” is that by the time you get to the field and set up, the creative things you can get during warm-ups may or may no longer be there.

The entrance of West High School’s football field had a short line for once. Like usual the Tracy Police has its presence at every football game…however this time they didnt have their big truck they usually bring.

Luckily I got to the field with a little time to spare on getting some creatives. I hustled trough the entrance flashing my press pass and made my way to the field. On the way to the game I thought a lot about the few games that I have covered this year and havent felt that I have had enough creativity so I knew I wanted to at least get some good pre game photos. However I only had 8 minutes to do it in and the main warm-ups were already done so I had to think quick on what I wanted.

I watched as the national anthem was playing and noticed a glow on one of the players (image at start of blog post). I immediately turned around and snapped away and the problem was just that. I found my self thinking that I “NEED TO GET THIS SHOT” and when I do that I mess up. The exposures of that image were terrible when I first took them. I hadn’t checked what they were set on and just shot. Luckily I “chimped” and realized that my settings were off and I started to work on my exposure and technique on getting the image I truly wanted. This also gave me a wake up call that I was just going through the motions and didn’t step back to think. The thing about photography is that a lot of times you get caught up making photos for clients and getting the safe shot but forget that to get the image some one will say “WOW” about takes a little risk and thinking.

Having one image that was great, felt great, but I knew I had to get more. Panning at night with green jerseys I found to actually work fairly good. Why? I have no idea but I have gotten some decent photos out of it.

Feature photos I feel as the key to successful sports photography. Any one who works the sideline of a game long enough should start getting some decent images. The combination of reading the next play, guessing where the ball will probably go next, understanding of the game and photography, combined with luck, should turn out good action photos but not always good feature photos. The last time I covered Tracy’s game they had been ran over by the team they faced so I am sure running all over Bear Creek must of felt nice and brought up the confidence of Tracy as they head into their playoffs after shutting them out. As you can imagine, getting photos of both teams during game action when its very one sided can be very difficult but I did get some good action shots of Tracy High School…and one of Bear Creek.

I think this is a good time to chime in on this image and why I am so MAD about it. As you can see its a decent image that could work fairly well in a paper especially if this kid did something amazing on this kick off return…however…the roster had him listed as a kicker…and I dont think he was the kicker having the team at the Record without this image because there was no way to confirm his name.

Overall I think these turned out fairly well as a set. I always like to wait till the end of the game to get emotions and stuff but if I did that then I would never get these over to the record on their deadline.
